Khalid H. Badwan, M.D., Aman Sethi, M.D., Charles Wen, M.D., David S. Wang, M.D.. Boston University Medical Center, Boston, MA, USA.
Background: Renal masses with renal vein tumor thrombi are considered an indication for open radical nephrectomy although a number of centers are performing hand-assisted as well as laparoscopic techniques for their management. This video demonstrates hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for the removal of a left renal mass with a renal vein thrombus Materials and Methods/ Results: A patient with a 6 cm left lower pole mass underwent hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy. Entire procedure was digitally recorded for this presentation which has been edited. Conclusion: Hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is a reasonable management option for renal masses complicated by renal vein tumor thrombosis. Its advantages include tactile sensation to delineate exact location of the tumor thrombus and the ability to manipulate the thrombus prior to renal vein control.
